Per millenni gli atleti sono stati soggetti per opere.
Pugili che diventavano semidei, scolpiti nel marmo; aurighi
che con un sorriso enigmatico fissavano la meta; gladiatori che lottano, sui
pavimenti delle ville romane o degli anfiteatri …
Ho sempre ammirato questo atleta, che gioca nella mia
squadra di calcio preferita: la Roma. Come quegli atleti, anche lui si è
conquistato con carisma, abilità e tanta tenacia un posto nella storia. Sta battendo
dei record nella storia del calcio italiano, ma l’ammirazione che mi ha
ispirato questo ritratto si basa soprattutto dal punto di vista umano.

art work.
Becoming half gods, boxers were sculpted into
marbles; ancient chariot drivers keep on staring at the final sign, with enigmatical
smile; gladiators keep on fighting, from the pavements of ancient Roman villas
and amphitheatres …
I have always admire this athlete, who plays
for my favorite soccer team: A.S. Roma. Just like those athletes, he conquered
a place in the history thanks to his charisma, ability and such a lot of
tenacity. He is beating some records in the Italian soccer fame, but what
inspired me was overall his human side.

Ho cominciato questo ritratto nel 2011. L’ho lasciato
sospeso per parecchi mesi. Poi, finalmente nel 2012 ho potuto riprenderlo. In meno
di due giorni era terminato.
Potevo scegliere qualsiasi altra posa, perché Francesco
Totti è molto fotografato. Ma ho preferito una più intima e riflessiva, perché penso
esprima molto del suo carattere. Inoltre, non è una posa da cliché da spot
pubblicitario, con elevazioni alla Pelé, coppe sollevate, smorfie da Hulk dopo
il goal.
I started on drawing this portrait in 2011. Unfortunately,
I left it undone for many months. Then, eventually, nearly at the end of 2012, I
could finish it. In less than two days, it was done.
I could have chosen any other picture, because
Francesco Totti is very popular among photographers. Though, I preferred one
pose more reflective and private, because I think that it expresses his
personality better. It is not a cliche pose from an ads, with elevations as
Pelé, winner cups up, Hulk faces after goals.

È semplicemente Francesco Totti, all’ombra su una spiaggia
del litorale romano, con la sua forza emotiva, la sua bellezza ricoperta d’oro
della luce del tardo pomeriggio, il tatuaggio del Gladiatore. C’è anche un velo
di malinconia, ma sempre un’energia ad essere migliore, che cattura chiunque.
It’s simply Francesco Totti, under the shadow of
the Roman beach, with his emotive tension, his beauty covered with the gold of
light in a late afternoon, his tattoo of the Gladiator. There’s also a shade of
melancholy, but always his energy to be the best, which catches anyone.
