🇬🇧 Last Wednesday, my Summer Course of Figure Drawing finished up, at the Scuola Romana dei Fumetti, and the teacher of that lesson was Massimo Rotundo, scholar of this course. It was a great experience, with the best technical inputs, a comfortable atmosphere among the students and expert teachers.
I got my certificate of attendance too, which I wanted to be signed by Massimo Rotundo himself with his well-known signature from comics such as TEX and many others. 😉
The theme of that last lesson was an idea of watercolours with Figure Drawing. The artistic suggestion was taken from the marble sculpture of "Dusk and Dawn" by Michelangelo Bonarroti in Medici Chapel at Florence.
After sketching the pose, Rotundo handed out dishes as palettes, glass for water and paint-brushes. Then, he showed how to mix white china, red and yellow ocre in order to create the middle shade for the skin. We should paint over dried paper, this time, and pass over a lighter shade to finish whole the skin. In the end, we ought to paint the background, cutting out a bit of contours, using a flat brush with vivid colours such as violet, blue, yellow, to exalt the subject. As for the highlights, on the other hand, we should leave the base of the paper.
I decided to stop my watercolour painting till the point I had reached at the end of the lesson, even if Rotundo recommended to finish our work at home.
On my concern, that Summer Course of Figure Drawing was positive. I laugh thinking how we students were drawing all together: we looked like a group of Bohemians raising up our pencils as they were glass, towards the subject to portray and then, down, maniacally sketching, using erasers time to time, while someone broke into telling joke, and teachers wandering as landlords through the tables while they were telling us that we exaggerated here and there we should insist... or just we should look the thing from another point of view... 😁
I achieved in many aspects of my style, I think, I understood how some trade tricks work. I am sure, what I learnt will be extremely useful soon.
Saying goodbye to some students of the course was also chance to understand how many roads lead to drawing: some is fan of comics, some only likes drawing, some tells stories through sketches, but all express their vision of the world through art. And I find that this fact is liberating, gratifying and creative at 360°.
Paraphrasing Professor Keating:
"What will your drawing be?" 😜
