🇮🇹 Come si rappresenta la Pace? Un concetto così astratto quanto concreto, che ha un'influenza sulla vita del mondo. Io ci ho lavorato per la locandina del concerto sulla pace che il mio coro polifonico, Iubilate Deo, eseguirà stasera alla nostra parrocchia di San Cipriano in Roma.
Ho chiesto un po' agli amici quale fosse la loro visione per la Pace. Sono rimasta sorpresa perché molti me la descrivevano con scene di guerra e sofferenza. Insomma, considerano la pace come assenza di guerra. Ammetto di aver provato sconcerto: come mai il nostro immaginario è dominato dalla negatività, per descrivere qualcosa di pienamente positivo?
Così, mi sono affidata ai suggerimenti degli antichi e dal simbolo di concordia per eccellenza, almeno nella cultura occidentale. Innanzi tutto, ho visto la stretta di mano come un potente gesto, che unisce in amicizia gli individui. Nel medioevo, dare la mano implicava abbandonare le corazze e le armi, per stringere l'altro, che doveva fidarsi tanto da accostarsi a tiro. Inoltre, la stretta raccontava molto della sincerità: troppo flebile dimostrava debolezza e desiderio di fuga; troppo vigorosa era un offensivo tentativo di supremazia.
Gli antichi Greci e Romani, ma anche gli Israeliti avevano un simbolo per il dialogo addirittura con il divino: un ponte di colori splendidi univa cieli e Terra, l'arcobaleno. Nella Bibbia, dopo il Diluvio Universale, Dio comunica ai superstiti la sua alleanza e misericordia; dopo le nubi e le tempeste, torna il sereno, annunciato dall'arcobaleno. I Greci e i Romani avevano Iris/Iride che creava il suo arco per comunicare i messaggi divini e loro ammiravano con rispetto e conferma del favore divino questa maestosa scia.
Nei popoli del Nord, l'arcobaleno custodiva anche misteriosi doni di prosperità, proprio sotto i piedi del ponte, dove gli elfi sotterravano secchi di oro e pietre preziose. Sì, perché la pace e la concordia crea ricchezza, sia spirituale che concreta, carburante per la speranza e la vita.
L'altro simbolo comunemente accettato per la pace è la colomba con un ramoscello di ulivo nel becco. Anche Pablo Picasso ha creato una immagine grafica stupenda nella sua semplicità proprio dell'uccello con il ramo, in occasione del Consiglio Mondiale per la Pace (1949-1950).
La colomba è un animale simbolico, nella Bibbia: spesso rappresenta lo Spirito Santo, anche nella iconografia. Questa è l'unica che comunica la fine del Diluvio con certezza perché il ramo è di un albero che vive nelle vallate, non è a fusto alto, e ha bisogno di una terra mite per sopravvivere. Inoltre, la colomba è simbolo di placidità perché non ha fiele. Negli umori corporei, un eccesso di ira aumentava la produzione di bile.
In questa locandina del concerto di fine stagione intitolato "Vi lascio la pace", ho voluto usare tutti i simboli e combinarli insieme, per rendere l'emozione della pace: il segno della pace non è solo fisico. I colori dell'arcobaleno fluiscono come un nastro dal pulsare delle vene di uno in quelle dell'altro. Un cielo luminoso che va a schiarirsi sopraggiunge la colomba con il ramoscello d'ulivo a suggellare la concordia.

🇬🇧 How do you represent Peace? It's as abstract as concrete conceit, which influences life of the world. I work on the representation for a poster of the concert about Peace, that my choir Iubilate Deo is going to sing tonight, in our parish St. Ciprianus in Rome.
I asked around my friends what may be their vision of Peace. I was surprised hearing that many of them were describing it as scenes of war and pain. In other words, they consider peace as suspension of war. I confess to feel upset: how may our imaginary be under control of negativity, even by describing something absolutely positive?
So, I trusted in advice of ancients and in symbolism for concordance par excellence, at least in Occidental culture. Firstly, I consider the handshake as a meaningful gesture, which symbolizes friendship among individuals. In the Middle-age, handshaking implies to put down armors and weapons, in order to give the adversary's hand, who should trust in each other so much to be under threat. Moreover, handshaking deals well with sincerity: it it is too soft it means weakness or desire to be elusive; too tight, instead, it is an offensive proof of supremacy.
Ancient Greeks and Romans and also Israelites had got even the symbol of dialogue with the divine: an arch of wonderful colours unified Heavens and Earth, the rainbow. In the Bible, after the Universal Flood, God announced to the survivors His alliance and mercy; after the storming weather, it comes sunshine, announced by the rainbow. Greeks and Romans had Iris who made her bridge to let understand divine messages, and they worshipped this weather event as a confirmation of divine approval in a majestic contrail.
In ancient, Northern people, rainbow represented mysterious gifts of prosperity too, and where it laid on the ground, they thought that elves were hiding buckets full of gold and gems. Well, because peace and concordance makes richness, both spiritual and tangible, as a fuel for hope and life.
The other common symbol for Peace is the dove carrying an olive branch. Pablo Picasso too drew a wonderful design of it in its simplicity, during the World Council for Peace after the Second World War (1949-1950).
Dove is a symbolic animal, in the Bibles: it often represents the Holy Spirit, iconographically. This creature is the only one that communicates the end of the Flood for sure, because the olive branch comes from a tree that stays in the valleys, it is not very tall plant and needs mild land to survive.
Moreover, dove is symbol of peacefulness because it doesn't have bile. In bodily fluids, rage overproduced bile.
In the poster I made for the concert of ending season of Iubilate Deo, entitled "I give you my peace", I wanted to use all symbols for that and mix them altogether, to recall all the emotions for Peace: it is not only appearance. Colours of the rainbow flow as a ribbon between the two pulsing wrists. Over a bright sky, that is going to be more and more clear, there it comes a dove with an olive branch to seal concordance.
