🇮🇹 ⛱ Ad Agosto, sono riuscita a dipingere sulla spiaggia! 😀
Non c'è niente di più rigenerante di passare anche solo una settimana in un luogo che ti fa stare bene e dedicarsi alla creatività.
Ho passato un soggiorno in Calabria, la terra dei miei genitori, ma in un posto che non avevamo mai visitato: Faro Capo Vaticano. 💙 Mi sento rinata perché nel Mar Tirreno ho imparato a nuotare, o meglio, a stare a galla 😉 ed è stato per me un tornare alle radici ma anche scoprire un posto nuovo.
E pensare che queste onde sono state solcate dalla nave di Odisseo, dai coloni della Magna Grecia, dai Romani, dai miei avi Normanni... Tutto è stato magico! 💫

È stato liberatorio dedicarmi al disegno anche sotto l'ombrellone, tra un bagno e l'altro. Se qualcuno vi dice che il contesto non conta, be', vi sta mentendo e sa di farlo! 😆
L'acquarello sa dare grandi soddisfazioni. È immediato, necessita solo di carta idonea, acqua, e una mina 0.5 mm per abbozzare l'immagine e aggiungere dettagli alla fine. Avere un posto dove stare seduti e all'ombra per qualche oretta è davvero piacevole, mentre si sta cercando l'esatto colore del mare che cambia le sue correnti.
Il mio primo tentativo è stato l'insenatura a Faro Capo Vaticano. Non ero sicura di riuscire a combinare niente di buono, anche perché era la prima volta che usavo l'acquarello fuori casa. Ho scelto di eliminare la fila di sdraio ed ombrelloni, i bagnanti ignari e rendere invece solo la natura, il Capo che nasconde il faro dalla nostra visuale, la spiaggia, la differenza fra l'acqua del mare e il cielo, l'erba del giardino del nostro albergo prima della baia; sul fondo, ho dipinto anche la roccia del Capo Vaticano, rude e ricoperta di vegetazione mediterranea. Ho attirato l'attenzione di una turista austriaca, Manuela, che mi ha chiesto subito quale fosse il prezzo; lei stessa ha conteggiato le ore che gli avevo dedicato. Lo so, chi vuole dipingere per professione non dovrebbe mai regalare, ma io credo che quando si fa un primo tentativo e questo è subito apprezzato, be', come segno propizio per l'incoraggiamento, è bene "Give it Away!" cioè "darlo via!" 😄
L'apprezzamento di Manuela mi ha caricato di fiducia e perciò sono stata felice di regalarglielo.
Più consapevole delle mie capacità, la volta successiva ho dipinto degli Ippocampi. Il soggetto piace particolarmente a mia sorella e pure a Kurt Cobain - forse, era una delle poche cose che avevano in comune! Nella boutique del mio albergo, avevo notato delle ceramiche smaltate con queste creature marine e allora ho deciso di immaginare dei cavallucci marini innamorati, sul fondo di una barriera corallina. Che romantica, eh? 😉
Prima di partire però mi ero già allenata sulla stilizzazione di ippocampi, per un decoro con i pennarelli, che trovo molto allegri.

Il terzo acquarello è stato dipinto proprio al tramonto. Ho rischiato quindi di rovinare tutto per l'assenza totale di luce! 😅Ma come potevo resistere alla sfida di immortalare un tramonto così splendido con il Vulcano Stromboli azzurro all'orizzonte, dall'altra parte del mare!... 🌋⛱ E poi, tutti attorno stavano scattando foto con gli smartphone e solo io stavo seduta oltre la piscina, fra pennelli e l'acqua sporca: non potevo proprio tornarmene in stanza senza averci almeno provato.
Il giorno dopo il risultato è stato una sorpresa! 😲

Infine, una mattina il mare stava cambiando le correnti. Dopo un bagno, mi sono messa ad osservare la spiaggia per renderla viva sul foglio, con quel contrasto fra i flutti verdi e blue oltremare che si gonfiavano. Be', gli ombrelloni e le sdraio bianche hanno creato quella profondità che invita ad entrare nell'immagine. Il colore del mare e quello del cielo è stato una sintesi di Blue Oltremare, Blue Navy e Verde Smeraldo. Il bianco è quello del foglio e la spuma delle onde è stata disegnata con la mina 0.5 mm.

Sono stata davvero soddisfatta dai miei disegni tanto da tentare di ripetere la sfida anche al mare vicino Roma. È sempre Mar Tirreno, a Fregene nel Lazio, ma come chiunque può immaginare, non c'è paragone riguardo la qualità dell'ambiente. Però, ho continuato a disegnare questa volta una scena divertente che mi ricordava un vecchio film: "Delitto sotto il sole", 1982, con un eccellente Peter Ustinov nei panni di Hercule Poirot, dai gialli di Agatha Christie. Per giorni, io con mia sorella abbiamo scherzato sul suo cappello molto trendy, che si è comprata in Calabria. Così, ho ritratto Jane Birkin in quel favoloso film, mentre stava distesa sulla spiaggia. Ed è stato così divertente! 😁

🇬🇧 ⛱ In August, I was painting on the beach!
Nothing is more regenerating than spending even just one week in a place that makes you feel good while you are dedicating yourself to creativity.
I spent my holidays on Calabria, South of Italy, the land of both my parents, but somewhere we have never been before - Faro Capo Vaticano. 💙 I felt immediately reborn because in Tyrrhenian Sea I learnt to swim, or I should say, to float 😉 and, in some ways, it was as if I was coming back to my roots while I was finding out some, new place too.
And I wondered, those waves had been sailed by Ulysses' boat, by Magna Greece settlers, by Ancient Romans, by my Norman ancestors... All was magic! 💫

Drawing on the beach was liberating for me, before and after swimming in the sea. If someone should tell you that the contest doesn't matter, well, they are telling you lies and know to be liars! 😆
Watercolours can give great gratifications. It is immediate, needs only watercolour papers, water, and a pencil 0.5 mm to sketch the picture and to add some details in the end. Sitting in a comfortable place, under the beach umbrella, for some hours is really pleasant, and in the meantime, you are looking for the right shades to paint the sea changing flowings.
My first attempt was the bay at Faro Capo Vaticano. I was not sure to do something good, also because it was the first time I painted with watercolours outdoor. I decided to cut off the lines of sea-umbrellas and beach-chairs, the unaware swimmers, and paint exclusively the nature, from the point where the Cape hides the lighthouse, the seaside, the difference between the sky and the water, the grass of the garden from our Hotel; on the background, I painted the rock of Capo Vaticano, rough and covered only with Mediterranean vegetation. Manuela, an Austrian tourist got interested in my painting, and she asked for how much that it costed; she herself was counting the hours it took. I know, someone who wants to be a professional artist should never give away their works, but I believe that when you are doing the first attempt and it is immediately appreciated, well, as a propitious sign considering the encouragement, it is good to "Give it Away!" 😄
Manuela's words reloaded me with self-confidence and so I was pleased to give it as a gift.

Feeling more confident in my abilities, after I painted sea-horses. My sister likes very much that subject, as Kurt Cobain used to - probably they are among few things she and he had in common!
Anyway at the boutique in my hotel, I already noticed some ceramic sea-horses, so I started figuring these marine creatures in love, in the coral reef. What a sentimental, eh? 😉 But I had already studied that subject before my journey, drawing some decoration motives with markers, and I had found them quite amusing.

My third watercolour painting was sunset. And I almost risked to ruin it all for the diminishing light! 😅 How could I resist from the challenge to paint that wonderful sunset looking to Stromboli Volcano, blue on the horizon, to the other side of the sea!... 🌋⛱ And then, all the people around were taking pictures with their smartphones and I was the only one still sitting next the swimming-pool, with paint-brushes and dirty water on a glass: I couldn't just come back to my room without trying at least. Looking at the painting the next day, the result was a real surprise! 😲
In the end, one morning the sea was changing flowing. After swimming in the sea, I stood still and looked at the beach around, just to paint it real on my paper, with that contrast of green and ultramarine waves, growing more and more. Well, those sea-umbrellas and beach chairs made the right depth that invites to come into the picture. The blue of the sea and of the sky was a synthesis of Ultramarine, Navy and Emerald. I used the white from the paper and the movement of the foam was drawn with my pencil 0.5 mm.

I was definitely satisfied about my pictures, and I also tried to repeat the challenge at the seaside next Rome. It is always Tyrrhenian Sea, in the place called Fregene in Latium, but as you may guess, quality of environment is incomparable. Though, I kept drawing this time a funny scene that recalled me of an old movie: "Evil Under The Sun", 1982, with an excellent Peter Ustinov playing Hercule Poirot, by Agatha Christie novels. For days, my sister and I were joking about the fashionable hat she bought in Calabria. So, I drew Jane Birkin in that splendid movie, laying on the beach. And it was so funny! 😁
